Become connected with Presbyterian writers and friends from across the country who seek to nurture their skills and support each other in “telling the story” through a wide variety of communication vehicles.
Newsletter
The Writer is the Guild’s online newsletter. It is published every month or two as news becomes available. Each issue of The Writer offers updates on our writers, gives information about upcoming events, presents columns related to writing, and provides helpful links.
Awards
The David Steele Distinguished Writer Award is given to Presbyterian writers whose works have made an impact on the church at large; the PPC First Book Award is given to Presbyterian writers for a first published book. The David Steele Distinguished Writer Award offers a prize of $1,000 and the PPC First Book Award, underwritten by the Presbyterian Publishing Corporation, offers a prize of $500. The awards are presented at the Guild’s biennial luncheon at the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) General Assembly.
Scholarships
Help for members is available from two scholarship funds. The Vic Jameson scholarship may be awarded to Guild members needing assistance (up to c. $300) to attend Guild conferences or other events helpful to writers. The Hines/Jameson scholarship offers financial aid (up to c. $5,000) for PC(USA) college or seminary students, ages 18 to 35, who are interested in pursuing communication careers in the PC(USA).
Training
The Guild offers occasional training events, conferences, and workshops . The Guild has also partnered with the Presbyterian Outlook to offer writing webinars and contests.
Contests
To encourage writers and to expose their talents to publishers, the Guild occasionally sponsors writing contests. Winners of previous contests have been published in The Writer and The Presbyterian Outlook. The Guild has also published two collections of short fiction written by members who participated in the contests.

My name is Jock Tut Paleak. I am a Parish Associate for Sudanese Ministry at First Presbyterian Church in Lincoln, Nebraska. I am not a member of Guild but I need help with my brief life story that I have recorded. I wonder if the Guild would help me to edit it because I want to publish it as the book. It’s title is ” My Transient Life”
I sent my $25.00 to the writers guild. I was disappointed that all activities of the guild are on the computer. I have not received anything paper. Why not?
I think except for our books, everything is electronic. I’m not sure what you expected to receive on paper. Print newsletters are very expensive and labor-intensive. We are an all-volunteer organization on a pretty tight budget.
